Wednesday started off bright and early with a jeep rental. Despite my lingering intestinal troubles, we were going to set out to explore the island of Lanai in ways only a 4x4 could allow. So we set off for stop #1...the Garden of the Gods. After a very bumpy ride, we soon arrived on another planet. This was a very cool place that felt more like being on Mars than it did being in Hawaii. Lava formations appeared to be "stacked" like boulders on top of one another. We walked around for a while and took it all in.
Stop #2 was at the end of this same trail, which led us to a very secluded beach. Supposedly there are sea turtles that nest here and sea lions that sun bathe on the beach, but we saw neither. Instead, there was just a very serene and beautiful view. We were not disappointed. We took the very bumpy uphill path back to where we began.
Our second trail lead us to "Shipwreck Beach", which was home to an old rusty ship that had fallen prey to the unseen shallow coast line.
We further ventured through the rocks to find some petroglyphs left by humans who had just beaten us to the spot (by several thousand years or more).
After a "quick" nap, we set out in our trusty jeep once more to catch the sunset at the Kaumalapa'u Harbor. We sat among the concrete blocks of the jetty near the dock and waited as long as we could for the show, until it was time to get back to town and turn the jeep in.
The sunset was as you might expect in paradise...mesmerizing.
